Foundation blog

One of the hardest decisions in life is choosing your foundation…okay slight exaggeration; however attempting to find the right shade to match your skin tone can prove to be a difficult process. Not only when looking for make-up must you ensure that the colour is right for you but also that it suits your skin ‘type’. If you have oily skin you need a different foundation to that of someone who has dry skin.  One thing I have learned over the years when using make-up is that less is more; also ALWAYS moisturise beforehand or your skin WILL feel dry, foundation doesn’t moisturise skin, it either dries it out or makes your skin incredibly oily!

Finding a decent foundation for a reasonable price proves to be a difficult task; you’re lucky if you manage to spend under £20 for a sufficient foundation that does its job properly. Even after having found the perfect foundation the problem doesn’t end there; next is to decide whether to apply the make-up with either a sponge or a brush as different foundations have different consistencies which require different methods when applying to your skin. I have found in most cases brushes are sufficient; however brushes are only adequate if the make-up brush is of good quality and is cleaned on a regular basis. I learnt not too long ago that cleaning your make-up utensils is an extremely important method to look after your skin, as old make-up and dead skin is left on your brush every time you use it (disgusting, right?). From experience I would recommend cleaning all make-up utensils at least one a week in order to keep them clean and useable.
Most reasonably priced, satisfactory foundations can be found in any local pharmacy, Boots or Superdrug.

Over the past five years since I started wearing make-up on a regular basis, I have tried numerous foundations not only to compliment my skin tone but also help with a good complexion; which is not an easy task when you have oily, teenage skin.  I have selected 5 different types of foundations that I have used in the past, some of which I have found beneficial, others not so much.  Below I are the names for each of the different products I used with a mini analysis of each demonstrating their strong and weak points.

Maybelline – Dream Matte Mousse Foundation
·         When using this product I have found that it gives a good even skin tone match and coverage. When applying this particular make up I would recommend using a sponge as it evens out the foundation better than with a brush. I would advise to always moisturise before using this product or it could end up leaving your skin dry and flaky.

Rimmel London – Renew and Lift Foundation
·         When using this product I found it to be extremely oily when applying it to my skin, the foundation doesn’t give good coverage as it is extremely difficult to apply evenly. Both using a brush and a sponge proved no different, neither were of any use when trying to apply this product. Overall I found myself to be very disappointed with this product as I thought with it being more expensive that it would have been of better quality.
·         Product Price: £8.99 (At Boots)
·         Product Rating: 2/5

Maxfactor – Ageless Elixir 2 in 1 Foundation
·         This has to be one of my favourite foundations out of the ones I have chosen, it gives an extremely good, even coverage and leaves your skin looking flawless. Either a brush or a sponge can be used when applying this product as both work well in giving an even finish. I would recommend moisturising before using this foundation, as I would with most others; an amazing factor of this product is that it lasts all day with no need for a touch up! Although this product is more expensive than the other two it’s definitely worth it and I would buy it again as it lasts ages!
·         Product Price: £12.99 (At Boots)
·         Product Rating 5/5

Maxfactor – Miracle touch liquid illusion foundation
·         When using this product I found it also gave a good even coverage, leaving your skin looking flawless, similar to the other Maxfactor foundation; however this particular I found required the use of a sponge when applying rather than being able to use a brush or a sponge. Then again the product does come with a sponge in a compartment above the foundation therefore proving it to be the best method. I would recommend using a moisturiser before applying the product as it has a tendency to sometimes leave your skin dry. I found the only real downside to this product to be that it didn’t seem to last me as long as other foundations have done.

Est̩e Lauder РDaywear sheer tint release moisturiser
·         Out of all the products I tried I have to say that this was definitely my favourite. It doesn’t even feel like you’re wearing make-up when you have it on, yet it gives you the appearance of flawless skin! Best applied with a brush but can be done with a sponge, the product gives your skin the appearance of a natural sun kissed glow and gives the illusion you’re wearing foundation. There is no need to moisturise before applying the product as it is a moisturiser in itself! Although this product is the most expensive of the bunch I have found it to be the best and also lasts the longest!
